Google reduces the workforce again, but this time not through trimmed. Instead, the company has introduced a voluntary exhaust program for some of its US-based employees and invited them to leave with a dissected package as it circumvents and reorganizes its first goals to further aggressively. Earlier this week, an internal memorandum was sent, which targeted employees of specific teams including searches, nuclear technology, marketing, and research.
According to individuals who are familiar with the case, the step is part of a major change for reorganizing teams of AI projects by Google, such as Gemini and Bard, as the company accelerates competition with rivals such as Microsoft, Meta, and Openai. The employees who receive this proposal will choose by July 1. Google has clarified that Exit is completely voluntary and not related to performance. However, internal sources suggest that the company has made it clear that some roles may not develop according to Google’s future direction.
This is not the first time Google has initiated internal changes as part of the AI change, but it reflects a change in the approach. Instead of large-scale trimmed, the company now describes a leader as a “worthy and effective transition for non-necessary cultural roles”. Although no particular number of affected people has been revealed, Google sources say that the voluntary program aims to administer the extra capacity, which avoids PR fall with previous sorting.
Additionally, the company has tightened its guidelines for returns. Employees who live more than 50 miles away and do not report at least three days a week are reminded of this policy. In cases where compliance is unforgivable, these employees can also be offered the opportunity to get out of the same program. This strict hybrid work says the enforcement teams with widespread pressure from Google to centralize the enforcement teams, improve cooperation, and reduce the dependence on distance as it creates the next-generation AI infrastructure.
This restructuring takes place at a time when the technical industry is experiencing extensive changes in human resources against artificial intelligence development. For Google, it represents an important moment – not just how it innovates, but also how it controls and defines the workforce. The company has refused to comment on the specific number of employees but emphasized that those who do so will receive broad support during the infection.
Internally, the authorities are focused on positioning Google as a leaner, more streamlined competitor in the AI race, ready to lead the next era of technological development. While this may not be apparent as a significant shift, voluntary initiatives imply a subtle form of structural change. Google is committed to evolving quietly while prioritizing a responsible approach to its work, as it prepares for the future that needs to be built.
